What do I need to wear? We suggest you wear comfortable and fairly loose clothing, bring a towel as you tend to get warm when you’ve been dancing for a while!
How about the footwear? As a general rule, you need shoes that you can spin in, so something with a smooth sole is preferable. Ladies stiletto heels are discouraged due to potential damage to the floors. If you get hooked on the dance we are able to recommend several companies who sell dance shoes.
What time should I arrive? If it’s your first ever class with us, we’d like you to arrive 5-10 minutes before the class in order to register and make yourself comfortable. We aim to start our classes promptly.
Do I need to bring a partner? We strive for equal numbers in our classes, so ideally we would prefer you to bring a partner. However, we are more than happy for you to come on your own, as we will rotate everyone throughout the class, giving you an opportunity to practice. This also ensures that you benefit from dancing with partners at all levels.
Do I need to book? No. Although you are welcome to contact us prior to your first visit if there’s anything you are concerned about.
Is it run as a course? No. We run our classes termly (see Calendar page) in order that we can take a short break from time to time but you do not have to start at the beginning of term. Our beginners classes are specifically structured so that you can join at any time.
Is there an age limit? Not at all, although our classes are primarily for adults (age 16+) and we currently have dancers of all ages.
Will the music suit my tastes? Undoubtedly some of it will! One of the beauties of Modern Jive is that it can be danced to a huge variety of music styles. Although it is hard to please everybody all of the time, we aim to play music that is easy to dance to from all eras, across most styles and tempos. |

What is Modern Jive?
Modern Jive is a very addictive stylish partner dance with great flexibility that can be enjoyed to most music styles. It’s very easy to learn and sociable therefore providing a great way to meet people, have fun and keep fit!
Whilst structured moves are taught, it is important to stress that these are only guidelines. Style is very individual and expressive interpretation is very much encouraged. The aim of the evening is for everyone to feel challenged yet feel that they have had lots of fun. |
